How many seasons have you worked under the Recognised Seasonal Employer Scheme?
3 seasons
What company/companies have you worked for?
I have only worked for Pick Hawkes Bay
Can you remember your first recruitment? Explain how you felt and what it was like for you and your family?
I remember the first time I found out about the recruiting. There was about 50 of us and they (PHB) were looking to recruit only 20 people. My family was very happy, and I was very happy too. Every time I look at a plane flying over Fiji, I would say to myself, one day I am going to hop on that plane.
Can you recall your first season as a RSE worker? What was it like for you?
I was very happy about it. I see the changes in New Zealand with the lifestyle. The work was very easy for us, it’s the first time to do it but the work in Fiji is very hard but the wages is low. Here in New Zealand it’s easy for us to do the work, but the wages are very high.
How did you adapt to the Western way of life? Were there any challenges? Were there any funny moments?
We come during the winter season, so it’s very cold for us. In Fiji the weather is very warm. I remember I would wear all my clothes I had to keep me warm.
Did you have a plan? What was it? Have you accomplished your plan?
Yes, I wanted my family to live a high standard of living. I wanted to be able to provide for my family, my wife and kids, and Pick Hawkes Bay has allowed me to do that.
Do you have any future plans for yourself, your family or your village/community?
I am going to extend my house this year and my aim is to build a shop in my village.
What has the RSE scheme meant for you, your family, village/community?
People in my village are very happy with what Pick Hawkes Bay has been able to let me achieve and in changing the living standard of my family.
What do you love the most about being an RSE employee and the experience that comes with it?
I enjoy the place where we are working. I work with other Fijian boys as well as Solomon boys and Samoan boys. We share stories about our families.
Anything else you would like to add?
I would like to thank Pick Hawkes Bay for helping me and my family and for bringing me to New Zealand. It’s lifted me up and my lifestyle. I thank you for that.
